Fear The Sword

Drafting Anything But A Talented Wing This Summer Is A Massive Mistake

This is the summer where it's imperative for GM Chris Grant to grab one thing and it's not a big guy. It's absolutely 100% critical that the Cleveland Cavaliers come away from the 2012 NBA Draft with a dominant wing player to put the franchise into the stages of becoming one of the best young groups in the league.

The shooting guards we've employed this season, Anthony Parker and Daniel Gibson, have PER's of 9.1 and 9.5 to date. They're horrific and we have as giant of a hole there as any team has at a spot in the league.

With budding star Kyrie Irving handling the point and the still underrated Anderson Varejao in the middle it is comical to think the team should pick anything but a wing.

Find out the rest of my theory after the jump.

Star-divide

The Cavaliers have made quite the leap this year because of Varejao and Irving. With Andy out last year the team sunk to a terrible low because there simply wasn't talent on the roster. I'm firmly in the camp that if he played all season we would have finished 8 games higher than we did.

Andy's deal isn't bad at all and we've got him under control for a couple years. It's pretty ludicrous to consider dumping off your second best player for low impact picks or drafting over him under such circumstances. It's easier to appreciate Andy more and more each night as he overachieves basically every game and puts up monster numbers.

His impact on the team is phenomenal and his career best play this season has backed that up. Tristan Thompson, who I'm highly skeptical of, is supposedly the future at the power forward position and likely will be given a great shot at starting next year even though he probably won't be deserving of it. Look, he's a massive project and drafting another 19 year-old who is years away is far from the answer.

The talent on the wings is a crucial element of any NBA team who is going anywhere. Guards do control the NBA game and it's imperative to develop someone who can be a high volume, efficient scorer on the wing.

Trust me, when we win again, Andy is going to be the one piece that brings everything together and makes it happen. It looks like he's not that valuable when we struggle but he's the guy we'd all be begging to have back in a couple years if we're in contention because of all the intangibles and effort he brings.

The dimension Kyrie has brought to the team this year from the point cannot be understated as he's changed the fortune of the franchise very quickly. But, his value isn't going to come close to being maximized playing with people like Omri Casspi and the aforementioned two guards.

By bringing in a wing player who can potentially develop into a player like Irving is the best move the franchise can make this summer. With Alonzo Gee emerging into someone I believe is going to be around for awhile we've got one wing spot locked down. The other spot is going to scream at us until there's someone in there who has a shot at the job.

The more Grant waits to fill the hole the more we're going to struggle. Gee and Thompson are the front runners to be the forwards next year but they're not good enough to really carry a load. They, and Varejao, are your dirty work and defense guys who can get you some points every so often but only average 10-12.In fact I'm ecstatic about the fact that we could pair a couple of superstar potential players with them. They fit into any style, don't need tons of touches and importantly can be highly productive with or without scoring. I love them (well, not Tigger yet) as complementary pieces.

As long as there are no great SG/SF prospects on this team that have potential to be as good as Kyrie Irving the longer we will toil in mediocrity at best.

Whether it's Jeremy Lamb, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Harrison Barnes, Bradley Beal or someone else, I'm all for bringing in someone of that nature to help change the direction of this team.

Even if Andy's not the center of the team in six years, the value of a snagging a hot wing player this summer very much dwarfs that of snatching up a young big man.

Down the road it will be much easier to simply plug the center position with some long, unskilled defensive player who can do a job for us in the middle when we need reinforcements compared to finding a guy who can carry the load on the wing.

It's really clear in my eyes the things we need to do to get this thing going. Say we draft one of these guys and he turns into another Kyrie. I'd be tickled to have Irving, Random Wing X, Gee and Andy as the next wave of Cavalier playoff squads.

Project big men are some of the most overrated things in the league. Let's go find a star on the wings this summer.

I largely agree. How many wins do you think we get by adding Beal and Mayo to the team?

I will say that I think without jamison, even adding a scoring guard will make us wish we had a big guy who could score

Some good centers in this draft too that don’t exactly come off as longterm projects. If onlywe could end up with the 5th and 15th picks in this draft instead of the 10th and 25th picks. (Assuming we trade Ramon to the lakers). I like Cody zeller and Meyers Leonard

Don’t forget, the most valuable piece to come out of the Lebron “trade” looks like it will be this year’s 2nd round pick we get from the Hornets via Miami. That should be #31-33 or so. Maybe we could combine 23, 33 and even our own 2nd rounder to get back inside top 15.

It’s hard to imagine a team that would take that deal. All those picks take up roster spots and most teams aren’t going to really benefit from all those picks without clearing multiple spots.

Is there anyone out there other than Lakers/Knicks who would be interested in Ramon?

idk but i was looking at the Lakers and would love to trade Sessions for Andrew Goudelock 6’3 Rookie Guard. I really liked him out this off season and wanted the Cavs to pick him in the 2nd round. He is doing good when he gets minutes to play.

Question to everyone. Sessions for Goudelock? I personally would take it because i think he will be great and hopefully the Lakers will think about this year and not the future.

a point guard who might develop instead of a guy who just outplayed chris paul last night?

Goudelock is a SG that can play PG if needed. If he was playing PG he is out of place and shows how badly they need another PG.

Are you referring to Sessions as the PG that out played Paul? Don’t pretend that Sessions is better or equal to Chris Paul.

Now I’m not good at judging what players are worth so maybe Sessions is worth more right now(trade plus Lakers first round), but down the road a real good PG behind our 40+ mins a game allstar PG is not as helpful as a young cheap SG that could(and i STRONGLY believe will) become great.

sorry wasn’t clear about him out of place. He can play PG, but i really think he is best suited for SG even though a little undersized.

We’d have to get a first round pick too…

so what do you think, Goudelock&1st round for Sessions, thoughts?

I know the subject of trading av is pretty polarizing but would anyone be interested in trading av to the spurs for Kawhi Leonard? This would improve our wing situation and if we do end up with a mid level pick we could get a Zeller or Meyers Leonard to try and “replace” av.

I would do that, and still take Beal if he were available. Irving, Beal, Leonard, gee, casspi, Gibson would be great.

dont see this happening. The Spurs want to get younger not trading the highest draft pick they’ve had in years for a 29 year old center/PF. I do believe AV is underrated but i dont see SA doing that trade

I’m pretty much with you, John. I’ve been obsessed with Beal for a while now. Only thing I would say is that if we somehow win the lottery again I don’t think you can pass on Anthony Davis. But if we’re in the 8-15 range I want the best wing player available.

No, you can not pass on Davis. I would take Davis over any of the wing players. Bigs like Davis are just more rare than good wing players.

Davis should definitely be picked if hes available in the top 3, but if he is not which is more than likely if we keep winning against teams like Boston, and the Clippers… we will have to pick up a winger to help Kyrie get some assists, and some of the pressure off him with a “shooting” guard.. not a plug/“good guy” like Parker.

Nice write up John, I agree with the wing, getting rid of Anthony Parker… and i am also skeptical of Triston Thompson, not because he doesnt have talent, or heart, which i do believe he has.. but because his foul shooting is terrible, maybe even 40% or less. hopefully that improves cause if it doesnt it may hurt us in the long run if he starts…

It was nice to see you posted Kidd-Gilchrist’s name on here cause I personally would LOVE for us to get him somehow, and most of the other bloggers on this sight that I have noticed mention either Lamb or Beal… any one of these three would be great, but I personally would rather have Kidd-Gilchrist first and foremost.

Dream scenario for Cavs would be somehow trading the assets they have now and getting two picks in the lottery. One of these being top 5 and getting MKG or Barnes, and the other being later around 10 or so and getting Beal/Lamb. Could you imagine a back court of Kyrie/Barnes/Beal or Kyrie/MKG/Lamb for years and years.

and by two picks in the lottery i mean one additional pick to go with their own pick

I’ve read that Washington is shopping Blatche’s 3 yr $23 mil deal to Charlotte in return for Tyrus Thomas. Wash would prefer Diaw’s expiring deal, but Charlotte doesn’t want to take on that much salary.

I wonder how much Wash would prefer the expiring deal… enough to give up their lottery pick? Probably not, but Jamison for Blatche’s awful contract/lotto pick (Baron Davis deal Rd 2) is something that I hope Grant is at least exploring.

if Washington is looking to get rid of a bad contract, look at Rashard Lewis. Man thats bad. Jamison for Lewis and a pick?

I’d give up just about anything other than Kyrie for Washington’s unprotected lottery pick this year, including, through some tears, Varejao.

Washington wouldn’t trade their lottery pick to us anymore than we’d trade our lottery pick to them…

The Clippers pre-CP3, Butler, Billups, etc. were a bad team looking to build around Griffin, Gordon & Co. They determined getting Davis’s contract off the books was better for their long-term health than their lottery pick.

Granted, this year’s draft is projected to be better than last year’s by a wide margin, but still, crazier things have happened.

If we are looking for someone to supply us with a little extra gas in the tank I guess this picture would be appropriate?

Oh my, this picture is hypnotic.

I want MKG from Kentucky. I haven’t seen Barnes play very much but from what I hear I’m not sure if he’ll be an impact player in the NBA. What are the thoughts on Lamb and Beal?

The cavs are going to give up Casspi because he's being froze out?

6-9 small forwards aren’t common, most of them are injury prone, and the guy represents a new market for the cavs. Casspi’s problems are in-court awareness and not getting the ball. Both are teachable, so maybe he needs a new teacher. When he plays and gets the ball he’s pretty good, he should be more of barkley-like player when he was is galil than a perimeter player. Give the guy some time and some faith.

I’m pretty sure Omri Casspi-Charles Barkley comparisons are banned on this website.

I said barkley-like as in a low-post type of scorer.

When casspi was 18 he was something else.

And we should totally fire Byron Scott or at the very least one of his assistants, then replace them with someone who can nurture Casspi. It makes so much sense now, bro.

I think there maybe something to the white-israeli taking a nba job way thing going against Casspi.

I personally think sportsmanship and international cooperation is a priority but you got a lot of people that want his jobs.

sportsmanship and international cooperation are fine. wins are better

He has to be on the court to prove court

Granted flaws in his game, he’s become a perimeter player, and wait for the game to come to him and doesn’t go after the game but 6’9" not injury prone small forwards don’t grow on trees and it’s too soon to give up on after a few month. What has he done wrong in the past month, not played. That’s the coach not him.

New Orleans won a lot in the regular season with Chris Paul and George Shimm still went bankrupt.
