You could feel the tension at the TD Garden. The Celtics led by 11 points but watched their lead slip away. The Cavaliers out hustled and out-everything'd Boston in the final minutes of this game, culminating in an exhilarating comeback victory. Anderson Varejao fought tirelessly for a crucial offensive rebound and set the stage for Kyrie Irving to have his best moment as a professional thus far. With 22 seconds left in the game, Irving dribbled at the top of key until there was about 7 seconds left, then went to work. Kyrie drove to his right, spun down the lane, hung in the air, and finished with the lefty layup. It gave the Cavs the 88-87 lead and ultimately the win when Paul Pierce missed the following jumper.
Kyrie Irving - Rookie of the Year; that's all I have to say.
Cavs Leaders: Points: Irving, 23; Rebounds: Varejao, 9; Assists: Irving, 6
Quick Thoughts:
When Byron Scott was asked about putting the ball in the hands of a 19-year-old rookie point guard with the game on the line, he gave the perfect answer:
"At that particular time I wasn't thinking about the age. I was just thinking about how pretty damn good he is with the ball in his hands."
Yeah, well that worked out pretty well, coach.
Ray Allen was a stud for the Celtics in his return from an injured ankle. Allen scored 22 points on 9 of 14 shooting. He was basically automatic from three and his jumpshot was as beautiful as ever. Paul Pierce struggled pretty badly, but Allen picked up a lot of the slack. Jesus Shuttlesworth looked like the best player on Boston's roster right now.

I'm really interested in what the Celtics decide to do going forward. As some of you may know, I live in Boston and am an intern at NESN. While many Boston fans are preoccupied with the New England Patriots Super Bowl run, the Celtics are creating a tricky situation for themselves. Are they going to stick with their veterans and try to make a final run in the playoffs? Are they going to blow it up and try to get a head start on rebuilding? I can honestly say I don't know what they should do. Once Rajon Rondo gets back, they will probably have a better idea of what their squad looks like and then you can make a decision at that point. The slow start for the Celtics does seem to have had a negative effect on the attendance at the TD Garden. Normally, when I went to a Celtics game, it would be packed. Now that the C's are struggling a bit, however, it wasn't nearly as full or as lively as it has been in recent years.
He's obviously been overshadow by Kyrie Irving's spectacular performance early on, but Ramon Sessions has struggled in the back-up point guard role. He put out another weak shooting performance of 3 for 10 tonight and has a FG% hovering in the mid 30s. Hopefully he gets his act together soon and doesn't drag down his trade value too much.
Notable Performances:
Antawn Jamison gave us a really really crappy performance tonight. I was honored to see it in person. 3 for 13 from the field for just 10 points and 3 rebounds. That is not the kind of showing that will get him traded and bring us back any sort of valuable asset.
Alonzo Gee is going to be in this portion of the recap pretty much every night we play a team with a go-to wing scorer. He did a solid job hassling Pierce, who had 7 turnovers tonight. Gee had 4 steals and, oh yeah, his nightly ridiculous dunk. (If anyone finds the video for the baseline reverse slam, let me know and I'll put it up.)
Anderson Varejao barely misses the cut for POTG once again. He's consistently the second best player on the floor and had the second biggest play of the night. After the Cavs missed a shot late in their 4th quarter comeback attempt, Varejao fought Brandon Bass for the crucial offensive rebound, dove on the ball, and called the timeout to give the Cavs another possession. Along with his usual rebounding numbers (9 total, 3 offensive), Andy was quite efficient scoring the ball. He had 18 points on 8 of 12 shooting and he and Irving combined to score 10 of the Cavaliers' final 12 points.
Fear The Sword's Player Of The Game:
Kyrie Irving
At the risk of sounding like a biased homer, should we start talking about Kyrie for Rookie of the Year or for a spot in Orlando at the All Star Game? It may seem ridiculous that a rookie who has played just 19 games at the professional level could make the ASG, but I think he has a legitimate case. After Derrick Rose, the guards in the Eastern Conference are kind of a mess. Rajon Rondo is hurt and doesn't have a stable timetable for his return. Deron Williams hasn't played up to his normal level, although he has improved recently. After those three, I think the door is pretty open for Kyrie. He poured in another 23 points and 6 assists on a ridiculously efficient 10 of 14 shooting. His percentages are phenomenal and he stepped up big in the clutch when his team needed him the most. If that's not an all-star, then I'm not sure what is.
Feel free to watch this video a couple hundred times.

Kyrie Irving playing in the All Star game would be awesome

Good win Cavs! Love to see the C's lose and come back down to Earth again

Irving just racking up another POTG

Victory as it should have been...
In the hands of Irving… in the final seconds…. and as he seems to always do in pressure situations… He delivers.
I think he is more deserving of going to the All Star game then either of the other two on the ballet (Jamison/Varajoe).
Anyways, good victory for the Cavs tonight.

There is a bit of a “pay your dues” and “win or don’t get in” with the NBA All-Star game voting. LeBron didn’t make it as a rookie either and he had a better season than Kyrie.
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
The Real All-Star Weekend Question...
Is not whether Andy gets in or not, or whether Kyrie belongs in the rookie game or on the real All-Star squad, it’s how can we get Alonzo in the slam dunk contest?
DanBell - January 30, 2012
Or how we can get the voters to have objectivity and not give it to Blake Griffin or a 5’10" guy every year..
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
kyrie has the 15th highest PER in the league right now, at a robust 22.93. i have to be honest, though, im starting to worry about tristan a bit. just does not seem to understand the game, offensively, at all. had a few nice possessions guarding KG.
davidzavac - January 30, 2012
also, we would be in line for the 9th or 10th spot in the lottery at the moment. its looking like 25 wins at this point, if you ask me, and the 7th pick in the draft. we need to find a way to turn andy into our fourth best player instead of our second best player
davidzavac - January 30, 2012
7th pick wouldnt be too bad...
But… i think we need to get a few more losses to get an earlier pick… we need to get a prolific scoring and rebounding big man… or a shooting guard NOT named Parker.. that can average more than 7 pts a game to give Irving someone that can shoot and actually pad his ASSIST stat.
jdelsandro - January 30, 2012
This draft is supposed to be pretty strong, no? I think we should be fine anywhere in the top ten.
notthatnoise - January 30, 2012
Yes. The draft is very good. Anywhere in the top 10 should be fine for a solid player.
Conrad Kaczmarek - January 30, 2012
No doubt that anywhere in the top 20 will be a good pick...
but I still wouldnt mind having one in the top 3 so we have a chance to get one of the big men… Drummond or Anthony Davis… either one of those would be a huge addition to go with our budding young crop of Irving (allstar) Thompson (great role player probably not an allstar) and maybe we can get a good shooting guard in Free Agency next year due to Irvings reputation
jdelsandro - January 30, 2012
Wow, just found the craziest stat. Will put it in the preview for next game.
Conrad Kaczmarek - January 30, 2012
random question: given age/upside/health/contract, is there any pg that you would trade kyrie for straight up, outside of derrick rose? westbrook?
id take him (over 5 years) over paul, deron williams, rondo, and, yes, rubio
davidzavac - January 30, 2012
The contract thing saves him. I think the better question (or more fair) is if we’d take him over guys like John Wall and Rubio who are still in the early stages of rookie deals.
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
Absolutely over John Wall. I’d have to wait to give you my answer concerning Rubio.
ahowie - January 30, 2012
I’ve seen Rubio play 14 times. He’s fantastic, but Kyrie is better I still believe.
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
You should consider age as well.
hans - January 30, 2012
They’re like a year and a half apart at most.
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
messing around on the trade machine (i hate law school).
chris grants job is hard.
davidzavac - January 30, 2012
Yeah, it’s not easy to pull any of these trades off.
Conrad Kaczmarek - January 30, 2012
Conrad got to attend a tight, exciting game... lucky dude!
Gee’s defense was good, as you mention, but I beleive he was guarding Allen most of the time, and not Pierce – who was guarded by Casspi, when the two SFs played together. Am I wrong here (?)
I also beleive that Boston could have abused Jamison more, by using Garnett down low in a more frequent manner.
cats&shoes - January 30, 2012
It was a little of both. Since Parker got hurt, the two SFs had to play a lot together. Sessions was also on Ray for some time as well as Irving. But yeah, Casspi deserves some credit for guarding Pierce too. Good point.
Conrad Kaczmarek - January 30, 2012
Maybe we will get lucky and Parker will retire?
I mean hes getting hurt quite a bit, and a starting SHOOTINGguard that averages 7 pts a game isnt exactly anything to be excited about right?
jdelsandro - January 30, 2012
Garnett’s got nothing down low anymore.
johnf34 - January 30, 2012
Too bad the video didn’t have A.C. and Fred McLeod announcing.
macdowellm03 - January 30, 2012
I know. For the life of me, I cant find the FSohio version. If you find it, let me know.
Conrad Kaczmarek - January 30, 2012
Cavs this year are an exciting young team, and there will be a lot of up and down periods.
Irving is an incredibly gifted young man, and will only get better as time goes on- he’s the franchise player the Cavs have been looking for to replace LeBum. He really impressed me on the few occasions I’ve managed to see him.
Varejao has shown a tremendous amount of upside so far, and between the two of them, are helping to drive this team.
With the addition of a couple or three strong role players, including a starting replacement for Parker, who is at the end of his career, but does add a certain stability to the team, the Cavs can be contenders. Jamison is too inconsistent now, and will also only have a couple of good years left.
While it won’t happen this year, look forward to an exciting year in a number of respects and support your team. Rebuilding after being gutted takes time.
